How My In Laws Actions Made Me Do My Wedding EXACTLY How I Wanted
I was married to the love of my life in 2016. I really had no idea what weddings entailed. I’d never even been to one. When now husband asked me to get married, I thought it be a smooth engagement and a easy wedding ceremony with us surrounded by our families. Boy was I wrong to ever think weddings were easy.
When we announced to our families, mine was happy as you’d expect a normal family. When husband announced to his family, every single person seemed to have a different idea of what was going to happen and on top of that, seemed to think their ideas would be incorporated into our ceremony or pre planning with no question. But MIL was the worse offender.
I’ll name her Diva if it’s not already taken. As it is her way or drama and tears will ensue followed by as many tantrums as she thinks it’s necessary to get her way. When husband let his side know, Diva immediately drove the half hour to our house. We were sitting here watching tv with no thoughts to planning or even thinking about the wedding, when she burst in unannounced with several three ring binders in her hands and dozens of bridal magazines.
I was sort of overwhelmed and just let her speak and plan my wedding out for over an hour. I had no thoughts one way or the other about my wedding and honestly, some of the ideas were good. She had planned the first 2 weddings of each of her 3 daughters (6!) weddings so she has some experience but her ideas were immediately clashing with ideas husband and I had decided on. No church. No white wedding dress or tux for us. Non denominational pastor presiding. Those were our ONLY three ‘rules’ we had decided on way before we even thought to get married.
Diva threw a fit over all 3 ‘rules’. But that day, husband only let her whine about the officiant. First, her uncle HAD to preside, a very devout Catholic man who we didn’t agree religiously with on anything. She claimed he had been ‘begging’ her to marry us. Husband said it didn’t matter what she wanted or how much uncle begged her. We already decided who would be presiding over the ceremony. When she demanded to know who and we said it was a dear friend of ours (who she knew), Diva burst into tears. See, our friend is a practicing Wicca and that’s basically devil worshipping to Diva. Diva told us we might as well have a serial killer marry us. I remember laughing, thinking she was making a joke but she wailed even louder. Husband told her if he knew a serial killer, he’d ask. Maybe he’d be a pen pal to one in the nearest penitentiary. She’d never had a child married by a serial killer before, it might be fun!
She screamed at him he was being stupid and if he didn’t take this seriously, she wouldn’t let him get married. I think she just wanted to take control of the situation back but she had said the dumbest thing to attempt that.
I still remember this like it’s etched on the inside of my skull. Husband had never taken control of a Diva moment. He never back talked her. He was always of the mind to take the path of least resistance. But our wedding planning changed it all.
Husband stood up silently and walked straight to our front door. Diva quieted down because his entire demeanor just completely changed. He’d taken control of the entire room and every person in it. He opened the door and stares straight at her with all the fury I’ve ever seen him.
“Mom, if you don’t leave right now, me and Fire are eloping tomorrow night. You won’t hear about it. You won’t see pictures. You have less than a minute to leave my house before I call the courthouse to make an appointment with a judge.” And then he stared at the clock on the wall.
Diva started wailing but she was grabbing her binders and magazines and was out the door in less than a minute. Husband shut the door and Diva peeled out.
That night, 2 of his 3 Sisters left nasty voicemails on his phone in defense of their mother. And bombarded me with text messages. Diva would regret whining to them as well. Husband told her if one more nasty voicemail or text reached us about the wedding, we were eloping on my step mothers birthday so we would always get to celebrate our anniversary with his step mom and Dad. Lmao. I never received a nasty text again.
I should break this into parts. Part 2 in a bit.

The BBC Breakfast presenter was this year hailed 'The Baby Whisperer' after soothing an infant who burst into tears while live on air
John Humphrys was one of the stars forced to defend his salary, claiming he does not deserve his six-figure salary as much as other public sector workers.
His comments came as he was named fifth on the BBC's list of highest paid staff members, earning a yearly pay packet of £600,000-£650,000.
But speaking on Radio 4's Media Show after the figures were released on Wednesday, the channel's Today programme presenter said he felt he did provide a useful service within the media market.
Asked if he felt he was worth the hefty pay cheque, the 73-year-old said: 'What do I do?
'On paper, absolutely nothing that justifies that amount of money.
'If you compare me with lots of other people - a doctor who saves a child's life, a nurse who comforts a dying person, or a fireman who rushes into Grenfell Tower - then of course you couldn't argue that I am not worth tuppence ha'penny.
'However, we operate in a market place and I think I provide a fairly useful service. Somebody has to do the job of trying to hold power to account and speak the truth about all that stuff.'
